The ever-inventive Dieter Roth created more than 200 artists’ books between the 1950s and the time of his death in 1998; bookmaking was an integral part of his artistic, cross-media practice. "Collected Works (Gesammelte Werke)" was initially projected to be 40 volumes, of which only 26 were ultimately published between 1971 and 1991. The volumes, which were released neither chronologically nor sequentially, are organized according to Roth’s own classification system.
