In Green Red Yellow Blue, four rectangular panels, each painted in a single saturated hue, are evenly spaced to incorporate the gallery’s wall into an overall composition. Ellsworth Kelly explored the relationship of color and shape in paintings, prints, and sculpture to consider how the shape of a positive form activates the negative space around it.
Kelly’s distinctly abstract visual vocabulary was informed by keen observations of the world. Recalling his childhood, Kelly described the inspiration he drew from seeing concentrated colors in the natural world: “Color fascinated me in birds—red streak here, blue streak there, green streak here—and I really love deep-sea fish. I feel that the freedom of colors in space is very much what I’ve always been involved in.”
