The elegant, slender greyhound, an animal associated with the aristocratic pursuits of racing and hunting, feeds on its prey. Barye’s scientific observations, in this case enhanced by his owning a greyhound as a pet, are seen in the details of the physical characteristics of the dog’s anatomy. Unlike many of his bronzes in which predators are engaged in frenzied combat, this composition depicts the retrieval of a dead hare.
