Little is known of Longuet, a painter of historical and genre subjects, landscapes and seascapes. According to an inscription added to the reverse of the panel by Lucas, he was a pupil and friend of the Barbizon school artist, Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña. Biblical subjects such as this example, which is drawn from the Old Testament, were often a source of inspiration for painters in the Romantic era.
