This print one out of two of 137 woodcuts that were conceived to commemorate the people and events connected with the reign of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, who ruled from 1508 to 1519. Hans Burgkmair, one of several artists who collaborated on this ambitious project, was responsible for 66 of the woodcuts. After the designs for each print in the sequence were created, professional woodblock carvers were subcontracted to translate the artists’ drawings on the blocks into relief prints. "The Triumphal Procession" series remained incomplete and unpublished at the time of Maximilian’s death in 1519. These woodcuts were printed nearly three centuries later from the surviving woodblocks, which today are in the collection of the Albertina in Vienna.
