Sakyamuni, the Historical Buddha, wears a monk's robe and a king's crown. His left hand rests in his lap, indicating his meditative state, and his right reaches downward, evoking the moment before he touches the earth and attains enlightenment. Out of view, a small hole in the dedication plate covering the bottom of the lotus base reveals the presence of fabric-wrapped relics contained inside.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest to the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore, 1942; Goodnow Collection, Baltimore; probably acquired by Elizabeth Goodnow in China, c. 1912-1913
