The penetrating eyes of this hunter are both a signof his “inner eye” (ojú inú) and of his likely maker. Like many African artworks, this sculpture left its place of origin without any identifying information. By comparing this work with that of well-known Yorùbá carvers, we can guess that it was likely created by a student of Fashiku, a prominent 20th-century Nigerian artist. Note the similarities between the eyes and mouth of this sculpture and that of a typical Fashiku work.
