Object Number 1996.48.5174
Four wood engravings printed on one sheet; illustrations for Stéphane Mallarmé's poem "L'Après-midi d'un faune." According to Fisher, "originally this was thought to be a proof of the blocks before they were separated to print the book. But Bareau demonstrates that, in fact, this sheet came after the book because a crack has developed through the knee of the faun, which is not visible in illustrations found in the book. There is no indication that this page was printed from separate blocks, but it would be possible to print them without such marks. This sheet was evidently printed for distribution to certain friends..."
