Imberline Damask Fabric with Leafy Vine Motif

1979

Physical Qualities Cotton, silk, 65 x 59 1/2 in. (165.1 x 151.1 cm.)
Credit Line Gift of Stiles Tuttle Colwill, Lutherville, Maryland
Object Number 2015.321
Light to medium weight silk satin imberline damask featuring narrow, complex stripes of multiple shades of blue, red, and green on either side of a wider band of dark yellow. These alternate with a band of light yellow ground. Throughout is a woven leafy vine of cream color that crosses all of the stripes. The stripes are created by use of multiple colors in the warp. The leafy vine pattern is created through a reversal of the orientation of the weave structure. Weaving patterns are reversed on the opposite side of the fabric, thus creating a truly reversible design. Woven and cut selveges on two sides. Cut on two short ends.
