Koichiro Kurita’s Chi Sui Ki photo series, created between 1986 and 2006, explores how “ground, water, and air…Each surface and their borders connect…” Here, his subject is a meadow bathed in hazy light. The artist connects his interest in nature to the writing of the American naturalist Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862). Kurita explains: “I’ve been exploring through photography what Thoreau spoke of as the harmonious relationship between nature and humanity.” The platinum printing process used here, developed during Thoreau’s lifetime, creates soft, one-colored images. Unlike other forms of photography, each platinum print is one of a kind.
