In this formal court portrait, the young Infanta Ana Mauricia (1601–1666)—daughter of Philip III of Spain—stoically meets the gaze of the viewer. Grasping a jeweled crucifix that she wears among strands of pearls beneath an elaborate lace ruff, she represents the
sober character of the Habsburg Catholic dynasty to which she belonged. Juan Pantoja de la Cruz was active at the court of Philip III in Madrid around the turn of the 17th century. The artist created an image of unwavering authority for the Habsburg crown at a moment
when it faced religious and political conflict within its European territories and Spanish colonies in the Americas.
