Collyer is remembered mainly for the portraits he produced for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, for whom he served as court engraver. He was also employed by the English print seller and publisher, John Boydell, making engravings after original oils. This image repeats a work by Flemish artist, David Teniers the Younger, entitled The Kitchen . Although the composition records several figures going about their tasks as they prepare various foods, it also focuses on dead game, fish, produce, and vessels used in the kitchen, these elements placed throughout in painting as still lifes within the larger whole.
