Pictured in this photographic image on lithographic stone is the artist’s grandmother, her face vandalized by a smash. People are formed from a composite of experiences and influences, some positive, some negative. Pope.L introduces this artwork with the following statement, one that he wishes his mother had shared with her mother: “Sometimes no matter what you do, no matter what you change, no matter what you give up—you cannot get someone to love you, even your own mother.” While so much in life is beyond our personal control, we have agency in giving meaning to what came before when forging legacies of our own.
