Matisse created "Jazz" late in his career, at a time when the artist began, in his own words, “to draw with scissors,” using pure color for the works. He executed the original 20 illustrations from 1943 to 1944 as cut-paper collages, which were then translated using stencils to create the final images for the book. "Jazz" has long been recognized as one of the most groundbreaking artist’s books of the 20th century, as Matisse skillfully combined his interests in color, image, and text in a bold and experimental format. Three prints from the publication are on view nearby.
