Patriot and revolutionary leader John Hanson (1721 – 1783) was born at Mulberry Grove, the family plantation in Charles County, Maryland. Entering public life as a delegate to the provincial assembly at Annapolis in 1757, Hanson eventually represented Maryland at the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, a convention of delegates called together from the 13 colonies. The Continental Congress became the governing body of the United States during the American Revolution. In November 1781, Hanson was elected as “President of the United States in Congress Assembled,” the high point of his career. The picture retains its original pierce-carved frame.
