"Ho-o-te (photo) is one of 250 or more kachina spirits recognized by the Hopi. Kachinas are benevolent messengers of the gods who bring rain, control the weather and reinforce religious and social laws. They live on the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona but visit Hopi villages between January and July, when they invest masked dancers with their spirits. Carved kachina figures are miniature representations of these dancers."
