Kolomon Moser’s embrace of Art Nouveau is evinced here by his curvilinear and asymmetrical composition of a beautiful winged youth with cascading hair perched upon the stem of a flower. Moser worked closely with the Austrian master printer Albert Berger (who printed most of the Austrian posters displayed in this exhibition) to realize this poster, which was printed from three large lithographic stones—one for pink, another for red, and a third for gold. By printing the flat areas of red and gold over the pink, the artist allowed the lines of pink to show through and define the various parts of the composition. The one exception is the lettering at lower left, where Moser cleverly reversed the positive and negative play of red and pink to highlight the association’s name.
