Edouard Manet took up pastels toward the end of his life. Given his declining health, the medium appealed to him as it required little preparation; odorless pastels could be spontaneously applied and took no time to dry. Manet used the medium primarily to create bust-length portraits of women set against plain backgrounds. Here his almost cosmetic-like application of stumped (or smudged) pastel strokes in the sitter’s face creates her fair and creamy complexion, set against her dark hair and bonnet.
