Rosalie Gill portrayed her subject’s softly waving hair, lace collar, and feathered fan with graceful, loose brushwork and muted, harmonious colors that show the influence of European painting traditions. Born into a Baltimore-based family, Gill’s early artistic education in the New York City studio of William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) and her participation in exhibitions in New York City, Paris, and Baltimore reflect the opportunities that were finally becoming available to professional women artists in the late 19th century.
