The date of this work is a mystery since Fielding never traveled to Italy to see Lake Como for himself. It is likely that he based this scene on an as-yet-undiscovered watercolor by another artist. He may even have used a print as the model since copying prints by contemporaries was a common practice.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by gift, 2004; John Beverley Riggs, Wilmington, Delaware; purchased from McMullens, 1961. George W. Riggs (1813-1881).
