Like the painter Jean-François Millet (1814–1875), whom he greatly admired, van Gogh often painted landscapes depicting peasants in the fields and the gardens they cultivated. Here, small figures working on a sloping hillside are all but lost in the expressive, rhythmic brushstrokes that define the tracts of land. This work was either painted at Saint-Rémy in the South of France or Auvers-sur-Oise near Paris, where the artist spent the last months of this life.
The Baltimore Museum of Art by bequest, 1949; Etta Cone, Baltimore, by purchase, August 10, 1934; Galerie Rosengart, Lucerne, by purchase; Stransky Collection, New York, 1929; formerly Leicester Galleries, London, 1927; Mme. Jo van Gogh-Bonger and V.W. van Gogh, Amsterdam
