Dunes, grasses, a fence, a fragment of boardwalk, and vibrant sun are rendered in shimmering planes of color. By 1952, artist Keith M. Martin had served with the U.S. Army during World War II (1939–1945) as a camouflage engineer, moving in 1948 to Baltimore where he spent the remainder of his artistic career. The type of landscape Martin depicted here suggests the barrier islands of Maryland and Virginia such as Fenwick, Assateague, and Chincoteague. These low- lying beaches are threatened today by the storms and rising sea levels caused by climate change.
