A small square quilt/wall hanging featuring a center block or medallion composed of a printed cotton handkerchief (designed by Yves St. Laurent) portraying an anthropomorphic representation of Autumn. The handkerchief measures 14-1/2" x 15" and depicts the stylized head of a woman, possibly African, with grapes or berries in her hair, a ring behind her neck, earrings, her hair arranged on the top of her head with a headdress of leaves and berries. The background is formed of geometric shapes of dark green, maroon, grey, dark rose, and olive green. The head is in lt. beige with black, green, orange, rose, lt. green, grey, grey-green, taupe, and purple details. A cluster of berries of similar colors is at the lower right. Three borders surround the central handkerchief, each of which is divided into two uneven sections. The inner border is 1-1/4" wide at the right side and top, but 3/4 to 7/8" wide at the left and bottom. The wide sections are white with a brown and blue chevron design. The narrow sections are orange with tiny green, blue, and white designs and red hearts. The second or middle border is 3/4" at the top and left and 1-3/4 at the bottom and right. The narrow elements are dark blue with a dark orange mad taupe floral print. The wide elements are maroon with a black "stained glass-like" pattern. The third border is 1-3/4" wide on all sides. At the top and left the fabric is a green ground print with dotted lines in red, gold, rose, blue, white or pale lavender, teal, and lt. green. The fabric on the right and bottom is blue with a bold floral in green, red, white, black, orange, and yellow. The corners of all borders are square. All construction unless otherwise stated is by machine. The quilt has a backing of whole cloth in burnt orange ground cotton with a printed design of a small insect in white, pink/rose, black, and teal blue. The batting is of polyester. The central handkerchief block is quilted in channel and outline patterns; the surrounding borders are quilted in channel, circle, and outline stitches. Quilting stitches are 14-19 stitches to the inch counting top and bottom stitches and are make using dark rose, bright blue, yellow, green, black, very dark rose, and white cotton threads. The binding is 3/8" wide on both sides and cut and applied with the straight of the grain to the front with machine stitches, then carried over the reverse and finished with hand stitches. On each side, the binding is the same fabric as the outer border on that side. The quilt is equipped with a 4" hanging sleeve on the reverse. The lower right of the reverse is marked in ink with the title, maker and date.
