For this series "Études de chevaux," the publisher Gihaut wanted to reprise the horse subjects of Géricault's earlier 1821 series "The English Set." Géricault selected six scenes from "The English Set" and composed watercolor models for six new scenes. The prints were done by Léon Cogniet and Joseph Volmar under the direction of Géricault. This lithograph is based on The Coal Waggon from the series "The English Set" (Delteil & Hyman 36)
