In this hideous likeness of Poe’s Raven, a bird looms before us. An empty noose hangs from the towering gallows and brawling, bickering ravens in the background suggest death and doom. A poem is engraved onto the ledge where the menacing shadow of the Raven’s open beak reminds us that it is the bird who is speaking. Translated from French, the poem reads in part: “Funeral cry, dark plumage/ I am the rapacious raven/Would you like to see my picture?”
