A long length of cotton printed by engraved roller in red on white or natural ground. The design includes four scenes based on engravings by Bartolomeo Pinelli (1781-1835) included in "Raccolta di cinquanta costumi pittoreschi" published in Rome in 1809, but Gallo-Roman monuments of south-eastern France are substituted for the Roman ruins used by Pinelli. The scenes include: young women dancing in front of the Maison Carrée at Nîmes, a bear-handler in front of the triumphal arch in Orange, a puppet theater before the arena at Arles and the Riez columns, and men playing a game of bowls (boules) in front of the Flavian bridge at Saint-Chamas. These scenes are arranged on a hatched trellis background with stars imposed at the intersections of crossing diagonal lines. The fabric is fine plain woven cotton with warps and wefts of varying size. The width of this length is seamed at one side and represents 1-1/2 horizontal repeats (full width of fabric except unprinted selvages, approximately 37 in). The length includes approximately 6-1/2 vertical repeats (approximately 21 in). [Repeat per Riffel and Rouart, 53 x 94 cm. (20.85 x 36.9 in)]. Seaming is by hand and the pattern is matched. The side edges are both selvages hand sewn to a backing. The piece is backed by coarse plain woven white cotton or linen and there are quilting stitches in patterns throughout.
