Based on Manet's painting, The Little Cavaliers, 1859-1860? (Chrysler Museum; Rouart and Wildenstein 21) which was a copy of a painting formerly attributed to Velázquez (now attributed to his workshop), Gathering of Gentlemen (Louvre; López-Rey 135). Printed in brown-black ink. While Manet originally created the plate in 1861-1862, he reworked the plate for the fourth and fifth states around 1867.
