A narrow sampler consisting of a natural linen ground embroidered with wool and silk embroidery threads. The wool threads are in the colors light pink, dark pink, olive green, cream, white, gold, light blue, grey-blue, and red. The red thread is worsted. The silk threads are in the colors black, gold, dark green, grey-blue, light blue, blue, cream, yellow, light brown, and mauve. The top section consists of bands of alphabets, numbers and strawberries and the lower section consists of verses and various motifs with the maker's name and dates in a cartouche. From top left: 'A-M/N-X/(flower, diamond, flower, diamond)YZ(flower, diamond, flower, diamond)/a-r/s-z&(crown, crown)/(band of 5 strawberries)/1-8/(band of hearts?)/Let spotless innocence and truth/(stag)My evry action guide(lion)/ And guard my unexperienc'd youth/(lion)From vanity and pride(stag)/(band of stawberries)/Let the sweet work of prayer & praise/(bird)Employ my youngest Breath/Thus i'm prepard for longer days/Or fit for early Death (star)/ (band of 7 trees a bird and star on either end)'/. (Cont'd) The bottom section has a rectangular box within which reads, 'Sarah Sanford/ in the Tenth year/of her age 1785'/. Surrounding and flanking this box are two angels with horns, two stars, a crown, a woman with a tool(?) standing on a tree, a man standing on a tree, two dogs, a shield, and the intials 'B' and 'A'. There are a few other unidentifiable symbols throughout the section. Under a thin border, two sets of strawberry bunches flank the shield, which dips lower than the above section. The sampler is framed in a contemporary frame.
