In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, printed handkerchiefs
celebrating international fairs or political events sometimes formed the
center of large medallion quilts. Children's handkerchiefs also appeared
in crib quilts and as quilt blocks in larger quilts. Contemporary quilt
artist and instructor Pat Gardner has updated this tradition in her small
art quilts, each focusing on one or more of her international collection
of handkerchiefs, including examples from Switzerland, Japan, Italy,
France, England, and America, some of which are the work of wellknown
designers. The range of styles available-romantic, geometric,
floral, juvenile, contemporary, Art deco, Oriental, and folk art-allows
for limitless themes and variations. Gardner adds modern fabrics and
quilting stitches in ways that contrast and/or complement the
repurposed textile. These three charming wall quilts are created from
an incomplete set of handkerchiefs depicting the seasons designed
by Yves Saint Laurent.
