A small square quilt/wall hanging featuring a center block or medallion composed of a printed cotton handkerchief (designed by Yves St. Laurent) portraying an anthropomorphic representation of Winter. The handkerchief measures 14-1/2" x 15" and depicts the stylized head of a woman. The face and hair are entirely in black except for the eye, which is reduced to a small white outline. The hair is in jagged pieces as if frozen and shattered. The background is of an intense blue with geometric areas of white at the bottom and left side. A line of red runs part way across the bottom. White and black and red marks float within the blue field. The quilt has one border 3-1/8 to 3-1/4" wide composed of uneven sized blocks and sections of various fabrics including: 1. Black ground fabric with red birds 2. Blue ground fabric with black lines 3. White and black fabric with jagged lines 4. Red ground fabric with swirling designs 5. Light blue fabric with several shades of blue in floral pattern 6. Black ground fabric with bold white circles, dashes, and zigzags 7. White fabric with irregular black dots. 8. Black fabric with grayish splotchy designs 9. Blue ground fabric with black plaid print. 10. Fabric with white section with uneven sawtooth edges and blue chevrons and borders and black outer edges. 11. Black ground fabric with red "suns" and dots 12. Blue ground fabric with black leaf design 13. Red ground with maroon black and white stripe 14. Blue ground fabric with ...white lines and "stars" The reverse is pieced of several fabrics including the black ground cotton with red birds, a section of a large black and white floral print, a section of blue print with white print in lines and stars, and soft-edges dark blue stripes. The binding is of the same large-scale black and white floral print as found on the reverse. It measures 3/8" on front and back and is cut and attached on the straight of the grain with hand stitching front to back. All sections, borders, and bindings are square. The batting is polyester. The hanging is quilted by hand in approximately 15 stitches to the inch counting top and bottom stitches. The center handkerchief is quilted in outline and channel and double diagonal lines. The border is quilted in various patterns including channel, chevron, diagonal lines, squares, and scalloped patterns. Blue, white, red, and black cotton threads are used to match each section. The quilt is equipped with a 3-1/2 to 3-1/4" hanging sleeve on the reverse. The title, maker, and date are hand written on the reverse.
