Small rectangular quilt composed of 72 blocks, each approximately 5-1/4' square, created from narrow strips of various silks pieced in the 'Barn Raising' variation of the 'Log Cabin' pattern in which simple log cabin blocks are arranged so as to create concentric squares of light and dark fabrics. Individual squares are composed of two colors of silk fabric--one usually lighter and one darker--pieced around a center square of burgundy velvet. Fabrics include silk taffetas, satins, and twills in red, dark grey, light blue, white, lavender, orange, light green, yellow, rose, chartruese, light pink, light turquoise, bright medium blue, cream, and green stripe or plaid, as well as velvets in dark gold and grey. The burgundy velvet squares in the center of each block are embroidered with various floral designs using silk threads and knitted (?) tapes or ribbons about 1/4' wide. These squares are outlined in herringbone stitches in various colors including gold, chartreuse, red, medium and light blue, light and bright green, and pink. The quilt is surrounded by a 6-1/4' border of plain burgundy red cut velvet. The reverse of the quilt is composed of two pieces, each 22-1/8' wide, of burgundy silk-faced cotton/wool lining which is machine-quilted in a diamond pattern with diagonal lines spaced approximately every three-quarters inch. The smaller sides are finished with a trim approximately 2-1/2' wide consisting of a 1' burgundy and gold silk and wool braid with multi-colored tassels approximately 1-1/2' long. The quilt appears to have been foundation pieced. All sewing is hand stitched. No quilting is present. ** Note: The Diehlman file in the Maryland Historical Society contains a notice of the death of Caroline Hammond Williams of 1428 Park Avenue on September 5, 1935 at age 80.
