Madeleine I, one of Matisse’s first sculptures, features a standing female nude formed with an undulating serpentine line. By folding both of the figure’s arms across her chest and altering them to appear to melt into her body, Matisse presented an uninterrupted, sensuous shape. To heighten the impact of the curved form, he manipulated the surface of the metal to obtain an extremely smooth and even contour.
