Even though Bacchiacca's Madonna holds the Christ Child tenderly on her lap, there is something deeply disturbing about this scene. The Madonna's hot pink gown draws undue attention to the lines that swirl around the breast, while her orange hair and acid green cloak add to the uneasy mood. A dark outcropping of rock presses in upon the Madonna's head and neck, forming a rough-hewn equivalent of her softly pleated headdress. Even the Christ Child's toes seem strangely long.
Why does art take such a bizarre turn at the close of the Renaissance? Perhaps artists had grown weary of painting views of a serene, harmonious world. Instead, they chose to explore the effects of discordant colors, distorted proportions, and irrational space. This strange, disquieting style is called Mannerism.
