This nude torso of a preadolescent male offers all the possibilities inherent in the rubbery statuary carved from blocks of lesser-quality white marble from southwestern Asia Minor and found in the Antioch area. Soft in the torso and large in the hips, the youth could have been Dionysos holding a pinecone staff and cup or grapes, or possibly even a young Herakles placing a wreath on his head with his raised right hand while holding a club and lionskin in the now broken off lowered left hand. Young gods and heroes were adored by the landowners of the Orontes valley. There is the further suggestion that the torso might even belong to Adonis, beloved of Aphrodite.
