Mare Incognitum (Latin for “unknown sea”) is a collage composed of 90 small square panels. Embedded within are multicolored textiles, found shells, a glove, and U.S. President Abraham Lincoln’s portrait in a five-dollar bill. The upper portion of the composition forms a flotilla of ancient Greek ships. Below, a turbulent ocean brims with aquatic life. Peter Sacks suggests the boundless complexity of humanity’s experience of the sea. Whether through global trade, environmental exploration, the brutality of colonialism, or the treachery of forced migration, the sea both inspires imagination and facilitates more sinister impulses of humankind. This recent acquisition furthers an expansive account of contemporary artistic achievement, which reveals the meeting and clash of cultures over centuries.
