'Mariner's Compass' Square quilt composed of 25 blocks, each approximately 18-1/2' square and featuring a pieced 'Sunburst' motif composed of small-scale calico prints and white circular centers sewn onto a plain muslin field. Fabrics include a Turkey-red ground print with black and yellow ogee designs, a yellow-ground print with small brown figure, and a green-ground calico with black geometric figure. A sawtooth border composed of triangles of this green print alternating with plain muslin surrounds the quilt in a border approximately 1-1/2' wide. The quilt is bound around the edges with a white woven tape approximately 5/8' wide applied evenly over the edge with 5/16' showing in back and front. The reverse is composed of white cotton seamed in two places in 30'-33' widths. The sections of the sunburst motifs are outline quilted. Circular quilting surrounds the circle created by the setting of the pieced sunbursts into the center of each block. The white center of each motif has one of several quilted floral designs. All piecing and quilting is by hand. Quilted in about 17-19 stitches per inch.
