Tomashi Jackson combines geometric abstraction, found materials such as paper bags and mylar strips, and artifacts from legal and social histories to layer the events from the past onto the present. Here, Jackson researched the displacement of free African Americans in the 1850s from their community of Seneca Village by the construction of Central Park. The historical displacement maps the contemporary uprooting of Black and Brown homeowners by real estate developers in New York City—the two historical periods are represented here in the images of women at center and right. Her work embodies the BMA’s deep commitment to the attainment of artistic excellence intertwined with social engagement.
