Large, nearly square pieced and appliquéd quilt in Mathematical Star pattern consisting of a large eight-pointed pieced star surrounded by eight smaller pieced stars appliquéd on a white ground and contained within a central medallion surrounded by a dogtooth border. A wide second border composed of another eight pieced stars appliquéd to the white ground surrounds the center medallion. A third outer border consisting of an 6-3/4" wide Indian-shawl inspired printed chintz completes the quilt.
Fabrics used include solid reds and yellows, and printed pinks, tans, greens, and plaids, blue with a tiny blue flower, a fabric simulating a woven pattern in an orange print, and white cotton. The dogtooth border is created from a rust-red with a tiny dark brown/black and white discharge print, which is also present elsewhere.
Quilting is expert, using 20 stitches per inch including (top and bottom) in floral and leaf designs within the field. The dogtooth border is quilted in diagonal lines. The outer chintz forder is quilted with sets of two parallel diagonal lines separated by about 1/2" that criss-cross with another set slanted in the opposite direction. These sets of lines are separated by 1" between sets in each direction.
The backing (Note: unable to see at accession due to green sheet quilt was mounted on for earlier display by owner) is formed of widths of plain white cotton seamed together. All piecing is sewn. Batting, if present at all, is very thin. The corners of the printed outer border are joined square rather than mitered. The backing is brought around to the front, turned under and stitched to form a thin binding approximately 1/8" wide.
