Welsh-born American artist Sylvia Sleigh is best known for her paintings that reverse traditional gender roles. Here, Sleigh depicted her first husband, artist and art historian Michael Greenwood, in their English home lounging on a sofa. His position is reminiscent of reclining female nudes first popularized in the 16th century by male artists. Although her husband is clothed, his role is changed: the man becomes the subject, and the woman becomes the artist. Sleigh challenged not only traditional art history but also common depictions of masculinity.
