Miniature Basket

Akimel O'odham (Pima), 1899-1949

Physical Qualities Tule stem, willow, devil's claw, 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.)
Credit Line Bequest of Florence Reese Winslow
Object Number 1953.220.B.158
The ability to weave a miniature basket was recognized as a display of skill; the quality of the weaving is measured by the number of coils and stitches per inch. Coils can number 10-24, and stitches 24-30, per inch. Letters written to Mrs. Winslow suggest that at least one basket by Susie White, a famous weaver of miniature baskets (photo), is to be found in Mrs. Winslow's collection. We have not yet identified her work, however. Field photo: R. H. Peebles, in B. Robinson, The Basket Weavers of Arizona, 1954
