The largely peaceful Eastern Han period (25-220), represented here by the model of a house, was followed by nearly four centuries of turmoil that split northern and southern China. Numerous kingdoms competed for control of China, as did proto-Turkic and -Mongolian invaders in the north. The contents of tombs accurately tracked this unrest as models of houses and animal companions came to be replaced by soldiers and supernatural guardians.
