A white triangle boldly breaks through a gray backdrop while
a tilted rectangle accented in yellow—evoking sheet music—seems caught in a gentle breeze. Felrath Hines infused this work with spontaneous energy, echoing the dynamic and free-flowing rhythms of jazz. This blending of artistic disciplines showcases Hines’ profound admiration for the power of music, which he skillfully translated onto canvas.
Realizing the connection between conservation and his artistic talents, Hines operated in the art world as more than an artist. He developed a career in the conservation field lasting nearly 25 years, notably serving as Chief Conservator at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery and at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, both in Washington, D.C. Hines remained dedicated to painting throughout his life.
