This softly brushed and rather wistful panel seems to have been started by Henry Inman and completed by Thomas Sully, both accomplished portraitists. The sitter, Mrs. Henry McIlvaine, died in 1834. In his Register of Portraits Painted by Thomas Sully (1908), Charles Henry Hart recorded almost two thousand portraits by Sully, including two images of Mrs. McIlvaine, both painted in 1835. Hart records a bust portrait of Mrs. McIlvaine, “deceased from Inman” and a head, “begun by Inman.”
