One of the lessons Callahan imparted to his students was the importance of experimenting with different techniques, “to do it— see it—in a different way.” Callahan was particularly interested in using multiple exposure to transform and abstract his compositions in unexpected and exciting ways. The technique involved superimposing two or more images by exposing the film more than once inside the camera. These three small photographs are contact prints, positive proofs made by placing the 2 ¼ x 2 ¼-inch negatives directly on top of the photographic paper.
