This bird's-eye view of the harbor at Newport, Rhode Island, shows a developed waterfront with a profusion of sailing vessels occupying the expanse of water beyond the city wharves. The paddle steamer Newport, smoke billowing from her stacks, is seen on the extreme right approaching the harbor. Numerous landmarks are discernable, among them Goat Island opposite the piers, Fort Adams on Brenton's Point, and across the harbor, Conanicut Island with its small community of summer cottages. Also visible is the circular bastion Fort Brown near a formation of rocks called Dumplings.
