Melvin, the artist’s former neighbor, walks assertively, purposefully, and comfortably, projecting his sexuality down a Los Angeles street. Referencing a famous saunter by Marilyn Monroe in the 1953 film noir Niagara, we see Melvin strutting with self-possession. Yet we also see him as a vulnerable youth on the streets, an experience that Mark Bradford himself felt sharply and personally.
