Louisa Davis Minot captured the thundering roar and ethereal mists of Niagara Falls after she and her sister visited the site in 1815. This painting offers a rare glimpse of the monumental waterfall on the border of New York State and Canada as it appeared before 1825, when the opening of the Erie Canal significantly increased accessibility and transformed the Falls into a popular tourist destination. Minot was a published writer, artist, and art instructor. Her 1816 article about her travels, titled “Sketches of Scenery on Niagara River,” details how the War of 1812 and the battles between British, American, and Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy forces impacted the surrounding landscape.
