This sheet of studies was once likely bound with a group of similar sheets in a "Musterbuch" (model or pattern book). The eleven heads on the front and back of this page would have served, in an artist’s workshop, as models for studying and copying a range of women’s headdresses (and in certain cases hairstyles). Although the women’s facial features are summarily described, the pose and angle of the heads were carefully indicated to show the elaborate details of each headdress to best effect.
