Vibrant, concentric bands of color on a human-scaled, rounded canvas recall Linling Lu’s observations of skyscapes, botanic variations, and moon gates—the circular doorways to ancient Chinese gardens. Lu, a classically trained pianist who infuses musical feelings and metaphors in painting, thinks of art in music terms: “making color adjustments in a painting is like tuning a piano.”
The One Hundred Melodies of Solitude series began in 2010. The title references the 1967 novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Colombian writer Gabriel García Márquez (1927–2014), which not only evokes a sense of nostalgia and loneliness, but also calmly suggests the introspection and contemplation of reading solitude from a greater distance, with musicality, joy, and clarity.
