Pair of Large Vases

1832-1851

Physical Qualities Porcelain with overglaze polychrome enamel and gold decoration, 34 3/8 in. H
Credit Line Gift of R. McGill Mackall
Object Number 1976.72.1-2
The vases are decorated with figural scenes that mirror each other; each has a scalloped rim, two lion-form handles, and four elongated dragons stretched across the shoulder. The figural scenes are enclosed in rectangular reserves against a ground of flowers, peaches, pomegranates, pink bats, gold cash, lotus and birds (some type of fowl), in shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue with a heavy use of white. The sides, below the handles, are decorated with phoenix, peonies, and melons. Each handle is in the form of a lion with its cub, playing with a red ball; the lions are gold with green on their heads, backs, and tails. The shoulders are decorated with elongated, young dragons applied in relief, blue on the left and pink on the right. They are mottled with darker speckles on their backs and have long green hair and eyes. One side of the neck is decorated with a man with a long beard, moustache, and sideburns who is wearing a red robe and is seated at a table. Six figures stand before him: a man wearing shoulder armor over a red robe, a man wearing a floral jacket over a red robe, a man wearing a plain red rob, and two clean-shaven men one in dark blue and one in light blue robes. On the other side of the neck, a full moon appears overhead. A clean-shaven man wearing a blue robe holds an umbrella over a man in a red robe seated on a pink horse. Preceding this group, are two men holding candle lanterns and one man riding on a blue horse. One side of the body is decorated with three levels of figural scenes. Two men holding banners and another man holding an umbrella over another man seated on a horse appear in front of the house. Two attendants wait at the door to the house. On the next level, two men are engaged in swordplay as others watch. On the next level, one man is seated at a table surrounded by attendants one of whom carries an amphora; there are 2 (food?) boxes, 2 pairs of chopsticks, and a bowl of (lichee?) fruit on the table. On the opposite side of the body, armored figures are shown in three levels. On the lowest level, two men hold banners decorated with the Eight Trigrams and Yin-Yang symbols. Two men stand on stairs; a third descends the stairs towards a two men holding banners preceding a man on a blue horse. On the next level is a group of eight men some holding shields, some wearing armor. On the next level, one man wears gold armor, another black-and green armor while a third wears a blue robe and hat.
