The red, blue, and gold floral designs on these English dishes are adapted from porcelain made in and around the city of Arita in southern Japan. In the 1700s, the Japanese government only allowed trade with the Netherlands and China. Working in the rural, industrial community of Worcester, painters at the Chamberlain’s Porcelain Factory either studied the imagery from Japanese pottery purchased from Dutch or Chinese ports, or from European porcelain patterns based on Japanese originals.
